“Take care” is such a common phrase and we say it so often … but what does it mean, really?
I’ve been seeing a rise in comments about self-care that relate more to spa treatments and timeout from our regular lives than something that we live. This worries me because I feel ‘taking care’ has to be the foundation of our lifestyle, NOT an extra.
I’ve spent a lot of time in my garden this past week and have enjoyed it tremendously. Dirt and seeds and buds and green things of all kinds make me so happy.
Part of the reason I can immerse myself in this happiness state is that my body is able to – painlessly – crouch and dig and push and pull and carry with ease. That ease is there because I walk often and dance at least 3 times per week in my Nia classes. (Yes, I know I’m lucky to have the time!)
This is something I do all year long, not just when I’m getting ready for spring gardening. This is one of my ‘take care’ practices. It’s a practice that is born of love and pleasure. It most definitely is not ‘work’ though it can give me the same benefits as a ‘work’out.
I truly believe that if you move in ways that YOU love you’ll be more likely to move more often, no matter what the time duration.
It may be that you can only squeeze 15 minutes of a practice into your day or maybe you have a luxurious ‘longer’. Maybe you are unable to move freely or maybe you can dance marathons.
Whatever your situation, there are such delightful possibilities for moving your body in a self-healing way.
You know my love is Nia and it’s an enduring love as I’ve been teaching for 25 years. I also know that Nia is not the answer for every body (wouldn’t that be so simple??)
I’d love to hear about your ‘taking care’ practices – the ones that bring you back to your Self and move your body in healing ways. Tell me about what you love AND what seems like a lovely idea that you haven’t yet initiated.
If you don’t have any ideas – talk to me, I’ve got lots of them ?
